Nairobi between meetings: what to do with half a day
A national park with lions fifteen minutes from the office towers, and a handful of other things worth the trip. What actually fits into a free afternoon.
Most people here for work get one free afternoon, sometimes a Saturday. That is enough for exactly one thing done properly, and not enough for two — Nairobi’s traffic sees to that. So the useful question is which one thing.
The obvious answer is the right one
Nairobi National Park is the only national park of its kind inside a capital city. Lions, rhino, buffalo and giraffe, with the skyline visible behind them. It is fifteen to twenty minutes from Upper Hill at a quiet hour, and it is genuinely extraordinary that it exists at all.
Go early. The animals are active at dawn and dormant by midday, and the difference between a seven o’clock start and a ten o’clock one is the difference between a memorable morning and a drive through some grass. Half a day covers it comfortably.
The Karen cluster
Three well-known places sit close together in Karen, south-west of the city: the giraffe centre, the elephant orphanage, and the Karen Blixen museum. Because they are near each other, two can be done in an afternoon — which makes this the best option if you want more than one thing.
- The elephant orphanage keeps a narrow public viewing window in the middle of the day. Check the timing before you set out; arriving late means not arriving at all.
- Karen is a solid forty-five minutes from Upper Hill in traffic, and rather less on a Sunday morning. Budget for the journey rather than the distance.
One outing per free afternoon. Every visitor who tries to combine the national park with Karen on the same day spends most of it in a car, looking at the back of a matatu.
If you only have an evening
- Westlands or Kilimani for dinner. Both are where Nairobi eats out properly, and both are a short drive from Upper Hill — see eating well around here.
- The Maasai market. It rotates between locations across the week rather than sitting in one place, so check which day it is where. Bargaining is expected and good-natured.
- A rooftop. Nairobi at 1,800 metres has genuinely good evening air, and the city looks better from above than from inside it.
A note on getting about
Ride-hailing is how nearly everyone moves and is inexpensive by most visitors’ standards. For anything outside the city, hiring a driver for the day is common, straightforward and often cheaper than two return fares plus waiting. Ask wherever you are staying; a good recommendation is worth more than an app rating.
And plan around the clock rather than the map. Leaving Upper Hill at four on a weekday afternoon is a different journey from leaving at ten in the morning, whatever the destination.
